Drinking and Smoking on the University of Utah Campus
The Founding Fathers of Utah (and your mother) would like us to tell you this is a wonderful opportunity
to eliminate a few bad habits. BUT! For all of you who like living on the edge, here are the rules
regarding drinking and smoking in Utah.
DRINKING
According to author Pat Bagley, in Utah, "one must buy food or a club membership to be served alcohol
or the universe will collapse in on itself." At the University of Utah, one must stay at the
University Guesthouse to imbibe, or a student life teamster will immediately put you in the penalty box.
If you are staying at the University Guesthouse or another hotel, and you would like to have a glass of
something stronger than soda before you go to bed, you may purchase alcohol at "secret, undisclosed
locations throughout the city." In other words - No Drinking in the Residence Halls. No foolin'.
SMOKING
There is a widespread rumor that the Surgeon General has determined smoking is hazardous to your health.
If you are a smoker, you need to know that the Utah State Legislature also believes it. Utah law states
that you must smoke 20 feet away from all buildings. While you are staying at the beach, may we
suggest that you consider snuff, chewing tobacco and nicotine patches as viable alternatives to lighting
up. B.Y.O.S. (Bring Your Own Spittoon)
Humorous quotes above are taken from page 64 of Pat Bagley’s book, Bagley's Utah Survival Guide.
An excellent Field Guide, you might just want to purchase a copy for your trip.
