Kasnic's Corner

"Summertime and the living is easy". Don't you just love it when someone comes up to you who is not familiar with financial aid and says, "Oh, I bet you're enjoying the summer when students are gone and you're not so busy". You take a deep breath, smile and explain through "gritted teeth" that many students are still here for summer school and this is really your busiest time getting ready for fall.

After spring semester is over and we have reviewed grades and attended graduation, it always seems like we have "oodles of time" before the beginning of fall classes. Where does the time go? I look at the calendar and it's the last week of June and the start of fall semester is just around the corner. How can I possibly finish all the things that must be done before fall! Somehow, someway, they always get done. Could that be why my hair has turned from black to white and I keep glancing at a small saying on my desk that says "As soon as I have time, I'm going to have a nervous breakdown. I deserve it".

Due to unforseen circumstances, I was not able to attend the joint conference of Nebraska/Wyoming or the Utah conference. From all accounts, they were outstanding as you might have guessed. I did hear that at the NE/WY conference, John Nutter left with a black eye and maybe some stitches! I'm anxious to hear from him what kind of session he was attending when this happened. I'm sure we'll hear about it at the RMASFAA conference if not before. It was something very innocent, right John?

Hope many of you are planning to attend the NASFAA conference in Nashville July 22-25. What more could you ask than a conference filled with great sessions, excellent presenters and in a beautiful setting! Other training to put on your calendar for fall includes Decentralized Training with Policies and Procedures as the focus. All of our states have indicated they will be participating.

Nominations and elections of RMASFAA 2002 officers are now complete. We had a fantastic slate of officers for each position. Thanks to each of you for being willing to serve our association. I am pleased to announce your officers for RMASFAA 2002:

President: Darry Voigt, Casper College
President-Elect: Jim Swanson, Colorado College
Vice President: John Nutter, University of Wyoming
Secretary: Julie Cooper, Johnson County Community College
Treasurer: Sharon Kienow, Northern State University
Associate Member: Robb Cummings, Sallie Mae

We're looking forward to the leadership of Darry and his board in 2002.

"Aim High, The Sky's the Limit" is the theme for our upcoming RMASFAA 2001 conference, October 14-17 in Wichita. Toto and I hope to see you there on the banks of the beautiful Arkansas River for great training sessions and wonderful fellowship with our colleagues.
