Bob Fomer Retires
"For me, it has been an exciting journey and a tremendous privilege to have worked with the most talented staff in the industry. But I don't know how you tell people you are going to retire and have them prepare for it. You try to pick a good time," Bob Fomer said of his decision to leave the Colorado Student Loan Program, the agency he has served since 1979, the last 15 years as director. Citing the soundness of CSLP's programs and its strong management core, Bob is confident that "the timing is right."
He feels that the most meaningful feature of his tenure has been the wide recognition of CSLP as a national leader among FFELP guarantors and the agency's continued commitment to students' access and choice in financing higher education. An ongoing challenge will be to provide added value to programs the agency promotes: "The concern is not only student loans, but how do we improve students' experience to help them to be successful? ColoradoMentor is one way that we've demonstrated our desire to be a part of the larger fabric of higher education in the state." Bob believes innovation will also be key to retaining schools and lenders CSLP currently serves: "Schools need technical support and lenders need a better return on investment. We need to champion these."
Immediately following his January 25 retirement, Bob plans to spend time with his family, and work with Denver Seminary's enrollment management team and on community outreach and urban leadership programs for young people. "I move on to new endeavors with great confidence that CSLP's financial strength, operational excellence, and new technology will lead to even better days ahead for the agency in providing the best in services to students, schools, and lenders."
Jeanne M. Adkins will succeed the retiring Bob Fomer. Adkins has served as Director of Policy and Planning for the Colorado Department of Higher Education since 1999 and brings to CSLP thirty years' expertise in state development, planning, budget analysis, legislation, public policy, communications, and press relations."
