2003-04 FAFSA Updates

The U.S. Department of Education has released draft changes to the 2003-04 FAFSA. The 2003-2004 FAFSA color is yellow with parent information remaining purple. Here is a summary of the changes for the 2003-2004 FAFSA:
- Instructions and General Information Changes
- A reference to responses from the CPS via e-mail was added to Page 1.
- "State Aid Deadlines" were updated on Page 1.
- Clarification on eligibility to file a 1040A or 1040EZ if filing 1040 was done only to claim Hope or Lifetime Learning credits to notes for questions 38 and 73 on Page 2.
- The value of exemptions increased to $3000 in notes for questions 41 and 76 on Page 2.
- Language to address the Simplified Needs Test was added to notes for questions 47-48 and 82-83 on Page 2.
- The statement "Grandparents and legal guardians are not parents" was added to notes for questions 59-84 on Page 7.
- Application Date Field Changes
- An additional numerical field was added to the amount of veterans' education benefits (question 51) on Page 4.
- Data element 60 referencing parent's marital status date was added to Page 5.
- Data element 99 referencing student's e-mail address was added to Page 6.
- Worksheets
- The final question on Worksheet B was changed to read "Money received, or paid on your behalf (e.g., bills), not reported elsewhere on this form."
- The third question on Worksheet C was changed to read "Taxable earnings from need-based employment programs, such as Federal Work Study and need-based employment portions of fellowships and assistantships."
- The final question on Worksheet C was changed to read "Student grant and scholarship aid reported to the IRS in your (or your parents') adjusted gross income. Includes AmeriCorps benefits (awards, living allowances, and interest accrual payments), as well as grant or scholarship portions of fellowships and assistantships."
