In the Spotlight:
Marilyn Haverly, Pittsburg State University
I have been involved in the financial aid profession for thirty-five plus years at Pittsburg State University. In that time, I have been Assistant, Associate and currently Director of Student Financial Aid Assistance.
I often think back to March 5 (birthday), 1964, when I started my career in financial aid. I almost quit working the financial assistance officer after the second day. I told my boss, Garnett Bloomcamp, it was boring and there was nothing to do. Oh my, have things changed. I feel like a pioneer when it comes to financial aid.
I really believe in order to have a fulfilling career in financial aid; one must love to work with students and parents. Even though my days are very full with meetings and paper work, I always find time for the PSU students. My door is always open. It is so rewarding when that young man or woman graduates and you know you played a little parting in their success. I truly believe in the quote "Remember today, it's still about the student."
I also love crunching numbers, reading the "regs", and overseeing the development of financial aid processes at PSU. I am very fortunate to have a group of smart, hard working, sincere individuals who work right along with me in getting our goals accomplished.
I was the recipient of the 2002 KASFAA Hall of Fame Award. I have a B.S. and M.S. in Business with an emphasis in management.
I am married to a "golfer" named Gary. We have a cat, Silver, who thinks he owns the house and we just live there. When I am not at the office, I enjoy golf, gardening and going for nice long walks.
