  In the Spotlight:
John Nutter, Assistant to the VP, Division of Student Affairs

John Nutter has been in the financial aid business for 14 years, all at the University of Wyoming. He began his employment as the Staff Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs. After holding that position for about five years, he was asked to take over for the financial aid director who was leaving. Thus, he started in financial aid at the top of the ladder, which is definitely the hard way! John credits his survival to the seasoned, experienced group of financial aid professionals who helped him through. "After about three years on the job, I felt like I finally knew what I was talking about," John said. In January 2002, John accepted the position of Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs, which means he went back to the office he started in 14 years ago.

After finishing graduate school in Washington, D.C., John began his career as a researcher for the Library of Congress. He landed a job as a Legislative Assistant to a Missouri Congressman. He went on to work with two more Congressmen, one from California and one from Michigan, over a 14 year period. In 1983, John and his wife moved to Wyoming. Neither of them had jobs or knew anyone, but after being burned out on the big city, it was a nice change of pace.

Over the years, John has served on several WyASFAA committees, and as WyASFAA Treasurer for two years. He also served as Treasurer for RMASFAA from 1995 to 1999 and is currently serving as Vice President. John has also participated in various other committees including the Associate Governance, Federal Issues, Finance and Audit, Membership, Professional Development, and Summer Institute. In addition, John has served as chair of the United Way campaign and currently serves as an officer and board member of the United Way of Albany County. He is a member and past Education Committee chair in the Laramie Area Chamber of Commerce. He is also the past President of the University of Wyoming Staff Senate.

When asked about his future goals and aspirations, John said, "As I begin a new job, I take with me the many lessons from the financial aid profession and add to them new experiences and knowledge. I look forward to helping make educational opportunities available to students in new ways."

John and his wife, Suzanne Lewis, live with their Australian Shepherd dog and calico cat two blocks from the outskirts of Laramie. John enjoys skiing, roller blading and spending time in the mountains. When asked about his experience as a RMASFAA board member, John had this to say, "My involvement in RMASFAA has truly been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my professional career. The friends I have made are so supportive. I've had the opportunity to learn so much about working with people and the dynamics of a vibrant and forward looking non-profit organization. I encourage other professionals to give of their time, for the return far exceeds the contribution. I thank the many RMASFAA members who have provided strong encouragement and friendship over my many years in the financial aid profession."
