  2008 College Goal Sunday

Colorado
CAFAA went on the air with KUSA (Channel 9 - Denver) to promote College Goal Sunday and financial aid though out the state.

College Goal Sunday

The CAFAA volunteers, Peg Mason from the Colorado School of Mines, Tori Apodaca from Australearn, Lydia Macmillan, who is the State Coordinator for College Goal Sunday, Misti Ruthven of College Assist, and Judy Ransom from CollegeInvest answered several hundred calls during the two-and-a-half hour call in.

Kansas
The 2008 College Goal Sunday event was once again a great success! Of the 19 different site locations, 14 saw an increase in student attendance, which is very positive. Statewide, Kansas saw an overall increase of 17%, or a grand total of 838 students that were served! As we don’t yet have the exact figures, we continued to see many students that were low-income, first-generation, or minority.

New for 2008 was our revamped website that was an extreme upgrade from past years. As we continue to build upon the capabilities of this website, we will strive to make it even more helpful to students and College Goal Sunday volunteers.

College Goal Sunday Kansas is very appreciative of the close to 200 volunteers from KASFAA, RMASFAA, and the local communities. We believe these volunteers are the best there is to offer and very proud to have them on our team.

As we move forward, we are confident that College Goal Sunday’s mission will continue to flourish in the great state of Kansas!

Montana
College Goal Sunday was held on Sunday, February 10th. Montana had 17 sites. Our numbers were up this year. We had 267 volunteers help 987 FAFSA filers get their FAFSA filled out correctly and in a timely manner.

South Dakota
The second College Goal Sunday was held on February 10, 2008 and there was an increase of 67% for students/families attending. Thank you again to the SDASFAA membership who helped with this successful event. The Volunteer Survey had very positive results – all would volunteer again!

The surveys completed by the students/parents had only three people stating it “was not worth attending” College Goal Sunday. The web page at www.collegegoalsd.org provides more information.

A primary purpose for College Goal Sunday is to help underserved people in higher education. Over 70% of the student/families attending had one or more characteristics for first-generation, low-income, minority, or non-traditional students. Thank you to the SDASFAA membership for their dedication in helping the college goal for these students.

North Dakota
The first annual North Dakota College Goal Sunday took place February 10, 2008 with overwhelming success (emphasis on "overwhelming" for a couple sites who received two to three hundred guests!)

Nearly 500 families were in attendance between the eight locations. Most families included the student and at least one other family member; which meant a large crowd for site coordinators. With over 150 volunteers state wide, locations were able to rise to the challenge and assist
families with completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). As an added bonus for participants, all students received a flash drive. Each location also drew winners for four $250 scholarships sponsored by Student Loans of North Dakota, one laptop computer and one iPod.

Feedback from families was very positive. Most attendees felt College Goal Sunday was helpful and got them off to a good start toward paying for higher education.
