  In the Spotlight:
Meet the Association News Chair, Larry Viterna

As part of the Association News Committee for RMASFAA, we are highlighting our current committee chairs and state presidents. In each “RMASFAA Exchange” we will invite four or five of them to be “In the Spotlight” and give you the opportunity to better know these dedicated and hard-working volunteers.

The “In the Spotlight” section, featuring State Presidents and Committee Chairs, was Julie Esau’s idea. “Good idea,” I said, “run with that.” Then the first thing she does is to say “Okay, you’re one of the first four.” So . . .

A University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate (BS and MS in Agricutlural Education), this Nebraska farm boy started teaching high school vocational agriculture in 1967. Six-and-a-half years later, Larry was hired as an instructor at the “University of Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture.” With a September 1975 appointment as Director of Student Affairs, financial aid found Larry (one of several hats worn at this small campus). Long story short, September of 2005 will mark Larry’s 30th year in financial aid with a five-and-one-half year stint at Kansas State University as Director of Financial Aid. Since 1991, Larry has represented USA Funds and is currently VP-Region Executive for 14 states.

Larry has been chair of RMASFAA’s Summer Institute two different times, served as Rocky Mountain Vice President and Associate Member Delegate, received the Distinguished Service and Ron Smout Awards, and has served-on and chaired other committees and has presented at conferences and training sessions. In the earlier years in Nebraska, Larry was State President, Newsletter Editor, and a recipient of the Bob Minturn Award. Larry was KASFAA’s Newsletter Editor a few times, too. He also served a three-year term on the NASFAA Board as an elected “Member-at-Large.”

Larry and Marty have been married for 37 years and have two grown children, Joel and Jocelyn. Hobbies include digital photography, playing the hammered dulcimer, reading, yardwork (though Marty really does most of it!), and watching college football. Larry is also active in his local church.

One more milestone happens in 2005 . . . he will celebrate his 60th birthday.
