Annually, the Rocky Mountain Association of Student Financial Aid Professionals
conducts the Summer Institute. This week-long training event is recognized nationally
for offering some of the best training in the industry to professionals with
a variety of backgrounds and responsibilities. In an effort to encourage diversity
in this profession, RMASFAA sponsors a scholarship for financial aid professionals
from under represented minorities to attend the annual event. This year, the
RMASFAA Board has approved the funding for three RMASFAA Minority Scholarships
to selected individuals. Not only is it a great opportunity for individuals to
go to this unique training but it also helps us to get an underrepresented segment
of our membership more involved in the organization and its future.
Here is what previous recipients of the RMASFAA Minority Scholarship have
to say......
“Hi everyone, my name is Maria Ramirez and I am an Office Assistant
Senior for the Financial Aid Office at the University of Wyoming. I would
like to take a moment to say Thank You and to tell you a little bit of what
it meant
to me as a recipient of the Minority Scholarship.
I was one of the recipients of the Minority Scholarship in 2003, which made
it possible for me to attend the RMASFAA Summer Institute. This was a great
experience for me. I had previous experience but had been away from the
field for a year, so to be given an opportunity like this was very beneficial
for
me. It allowed me to get a refresher on the ever changing world of Financial
Aid which was a definite bonus for my job. And to top it off, I had a great
time being there. We had excellent speakers and a variety of different
activities which made it possible to interact with a diverse group of people.
The atmosphere
was very relaxed and welcoming. I believe that everyone felt this way.
Whether they were very new to the financial aid world or whether they were
veterans,
it just seemed that everyone had something to learn or some words of wisdom
to share. In a nut shell, I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity
to attend this training which was made possible by the Minority Scholarship.
Thank you to the committee who made this possible and I hope that future
recipients of this scholarship are able to benefit from it, as I did.”

“In my opinion, SI offers the most intense and in-depth training opportunities
made available to Financial Aid Administrators on all levels. By no other
means are you given such a unique opportunity, to feast on a wealth of information,
for an extended period of time (week long training). This information in
turn
increases one's knowledge base and helps to develop skills necessary in
the assistance of us becoming more effective aid administrator. And, even
more
importantly, it affords you an opportunity to meet and become acquainted
with other aid administrators from other areas.
I sincerely would like to thank the RMASFAA Minority Scholarship Committee,
for providing me with yet another chance to capitalize on such a unique
training opportunity. So much so, that my future plans extends to me pursing
a career
with the U.S. Department of Education.”
Thank you,
