Meet the RMASFAA Vice President, Katie Nettell

I was born in Devils Lake, ND, to a farmer and his wife. One of 4 children, I learned the value of hard work by spending summers operating farm equipment in the fields. In 1981, I graduated from North Dakota State University with a B.S. degree in Home Economics Education. The dream was helping families as an extension home economist. So much for dreams.

I spent a lot of time doing different things before becoming the Financial Aid Director in my home town of Devils Lake. Scott (my husband) and I lived and worked in the Minneapolis area for several years. We made friends and enjoyed the lives of Yuppies. Then we had our daughter, Molly, and that changed our perspective of what kind of life we wanted to live. We decided to move back to Devils Lake to farm and be close to family. Once back on the farm, it wasn’t long before Scott and I became parents of twin boys.

When the children were 2 and 4 years old, I accepted a position as the Cooperative Education Coordinator at Lake Region State College. In 1996, I became the Financial Aid Director. My dream had now come true. I was able to help students and families accomplish their dreams of getting an education.

I have been active in RMASFAA and NDASFAA from my start in financial aid. Summer Institute gave me the foundation I needed to administer financial aid on my campus. I have been a member of several RMASFAA and NDASFAA committees over the years. I am finishing up a term as NDASFAA President and RMASFAA state delegate and will be the 2004 RMASFAA Vice President.

If financial aid keeps me running one direction, my family keeps me running the other. We are an active family who participates in many school activities, all sports, Girl scouts and our church.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of RMASFAA for their friendships and leadership. You provide wonderful opportunities for people to grow.
